Mobile Health Unit (MHU) Assessment – Madurai District, Tamil Nadu
A rapid assessment conducted to evaluate the functioning, accessibility, and healthcare service delivery effectiveness of the Mobile Health Unit (MHU) operating in Samathuvapuram village, Melur block of Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. The assessment examined healthcare infrastructure, service frequency, staff preparedness, beneficiary satisfaction, medical consultations, referral systems, and operational efficiency in delivering essential healthcare services to underserved rural communities.

Objective
To assess the functioning and operational effectiveness of the Mobile Health Unit (MHU) in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu through a rapid assessment approach. The assessment focused on evaluating healthcare accessibility, infrastructure readiness, service frequency, staff preparedness, medicine availability, beneficiary satisfaction, and the overall quality of healthcare services delivered through the Mobile Health Unit.

Key Outcomes
- The Mobile Health Unit operated approximately 20–24 days per month and visited the community once every month, ensuring consistent access to healthcare services for underserved rural populations. The camp generally operated from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, depending on beneficiary flow.
- On the day of assessment, the MHU served 67 beneficiaries, including 10 male and 57 female beneficiaries, reflecting strong utilization among women beneficiaries. Across the previous three months (April–June 2024), the MHU served 4,280 beneficiaries through multiple healthcare camps.
- The MHU delivered healthcare services addressing conditions such as:
- Respiratory infections
- Diabetes and hypertension
- Common fever and pain management
- General health consultations
- Prescription-based medicines were provided free of cost to beneficiaries.
- Health awareness sessions were conducted on:
- Diabetes and hypertension awareness
- Hygiene and preventive healthcare
- Nutrition and balanced diet
- Maternal and child health awareness
- Community members actively participated in these sessions, demonstrating strong engagement in preventive healthcare practices.
- Beneficiaries expressed high levels of satisfaction with the Mobile Health Unit services, particularly appreciating the professional behavior of staff, availability of medicines, reduced travel burden, and quality medical consultations.
- Strong documentation systems and beneficiary records were maintained with consistency between field operations and reported data. Areas for improvement identified included better accessibility for elderly and differently abled persons, improved privacy during consultations, preventive healthcare compliance measures, and expanded health awareness coverage.
