Mobile Health Unit (MHU) Assessment – Raichur District, Karnataka
A rapid assessment conducted to evaluate the functioning, accessibility, and healthcare service delivery effectiveness of the Mobile Health Unit (MHU) operating in Airapur village of Raichur district, Karnataka. The assessment examined healthcare infrastructure, service frequency, staff preparedness, beneficiary satisfaction, medical consultations, and operational efficiency in delivering essential healthcare services to underserved rural communities.

Objective
To assess the functioning and operational effectiveness of the Mobile Health Unit (MHU) in Raichur district of Karnataka through a rapid assessment approach. The assessment focused on evaluating healthcare accessibility, infrastructure readiness, service frequency, staffing adequacy, medicine availability, beneficiary satisfaction, and the overall quality of healthcare services delivered through the Mobile Health Unit.

Key Outcomes
- The Mobile Health Unit visited the community once every month and was positively received by beneficiaries, ensuring continued access to essential healthcare services in underserved rural areas.
- On the day of assessment, a total of 128 beneficiaries received healthcare services, including 52 male and 76 female beneficiaries, reflecting higher utilization among women. Beneficiaries reported high satisfaction with the MHU services, particularly appreciating free medicines, reduced travel costs, shorter waiting times, and patient-friendly support from healthcare staff.
- Healthcare staff demonstrated respectful behaviour, professionalism, and sensitivity toward elderly individuals, women, and persons with disabilities. Doctors provided adequate consultation time and detailed medical guidance to patients.
- The MHU provided medical consultations, diagnostic screening, medicine distribution, and referral support to nearby PHCs and district hospitals for specialised treatment needs. Health awareness sessions covered:
- Hypertension and diabetes awareness
- HIV/AIDS awareness
- Breast and uterine cancer awareness
- Tobacco awareness
- Hygiene awareness for children
- Strong documentation and patient record systems were maintained with consistency between field operations and reported data. Opportunities for improvement were identified in waste segregation systems, patient privacy during physical examinations, and community outreach mechanisms.
